La epistemología y la metodología naturalistas de la matemática de Ph. Kitcher

With his book The Nature of Mathematical Knowledge, Ph. Kitcher, who had been doing extensive research in the history of the subject and in the contemporary debates on epistemology, saw clearly the need for a change in philosophy of mathematics. His goal was to replace the dominant, apriorist philosophy of mathematics with an empiricist philosophy. The current philosophies of mathematics all appeared, according to his analysis, not to fit well with how mathematicians actually do mathematics. A shift in orientation should invoke the more general reflection that causal, genetic factors are as significant for epistemology as logical structure. As I am to a large extent sympathetic with Kitcher's proposal, my aims here will be simple: first I start presenting Kitcher's argument, and then I try to raise some doubts about his contribution. These doubts come probably from my unskilfulness to follow the torrential flow of Kitcher's ideas. Con su libro The Nature of Mathematical Knowledge, Ph. Kitcher, que había estado llevando a cabo una extensa investigación sobre la historia del tema y sobre los debates contemporáneos en torno a la epistemología, vio claramente la necesidad de un cambio en filosofía de la matemática. Su objetivo era reemplazar la predominante filosofía apriorista de la matemática por una filosofía empirista. Las filosofías actuales de la matemática aparecieron todas, de acuerdo con su análisis, para no encajar de modo adecuado con la forma en que los matemáticos hacen realmente matemáticas. Un cambio de orientación debería invocar la reflexión más general de que los factores genéticos causales son tan importantes para la epistemología como la estructura lógica. Como simpatizo en gran medida con la propuesta de Kitcher, mis objetivos aquí serán simples: primero comienzo presentando el argumento de Kitcher, y luego trato de plantear algunas dudas sobre su contribución. Estas dudas surgen probablemente de mi falta de habilidad para seguir el flujo torrencial de las ideas de Kitcher

En el presente trabajo analizamos algunas características del discurso ideológico y se señalan algunas de las muchas y profundas diferencias entre la ciencia y la ideología. Después abordamos las condiciones que habrían de darse para que un discurso ideoló gico pudiera ser científico, y las razones que avalarían la imposibilidad de que tal discurso fuera científico. In this paper I analyze some characteristics of ideological discourse and point out some of the profound differences between science and ideology. Then I address the conditions that would have to be met so that an ideological discourse could be scientific, and the reasons that would support the impossibility of such discourse being scientific

Discurso público y manipulación: el caso de Julio César

We analyze manipulation in public discourse through the Shakespearean drama Julius Caesar, and J.L. Mankiewicz’s film version. As the focus of the discourse is placed on the action, well designed coherent arguments in the discourse become less useful than emotional appeals and striking images. It hides the truth with brilliant but pernicious rhetoric. When confronted with a manipulating discourse, only active participation, without giving up rhetorical argumentation, can keep up our guard against manipulation in a critical, rational and reasonable way.Analizamos la manipulación en el discurso público, siguiendo el drama shakespeareano Julio César y la versión fílmica de J.L. Mankiewicz. Al centrarse este discurso en la acción, son menos útiles los argumentos coherentes y bien elaborados que las apelaciones emotivas y las imágenes impactantes. Se oculta la verdad con una retórica brillante, pero perniciosa. Solo la participación activa ante la recepción de un discurso manipulador, sin renunciar a la argumentación retórica, puede ponernos en guardia de forma crítica, racional y razonable

The relevance of sophistic thought to contemporary issues is beyond doubt. Some scholars have made contributions to our understanding of the cultural contexts in which the Sophists lived and worked, including an exposition of general principles that defined their argumentative strategies and practices. Our aim is to examine these strategies and practices to select some elements of a (possible) sophistic logic. La rellevància del pensament sofista per als problemes contemporanis no admet cap dubte.
